Welcome to our new OTA Rep!

KOTA Executive Board member, OTA Representative: Sherri A Stephens, COTA/L

Biography: I originally went to college to be an Elementary Education Teacher but a few hours short of graduation, I had to quit school to care for my child. I went back 19 years later, very determined and ready for a career helping others. I was accepted into the OTA program at JCTC and graduated with honors receiving my diploma in May 2010. Having sent out resumes before actually graduating, I was called a week after graduation by Mary Kolb, OTR/L at Cedar Lake Lodge and after two interviews began work there on June 28, 2010 and am currently employed there. This is a wonderful residential facility for adults with ID/DD. Since being here, I have served as chairperson of the Aging Committee which is committed to learning as much as possible about dementia processes, medications and any training opportunities available for staff who work with our individuals with this diagnosis. I also serve on the Interdisciplinary Team, the Dysphagia Team as well as the Incontinency Team. Within all of these committees, we strive to create guidelines specific to each person for staff to follow that will make things better for that person as well as the staff assisting that person. I am currently a member of the AOTA and the KOTA and intend to maintain my memberships. I am also currently seeking training as a dementia care specialist. I would consider it an honor to represent myself and others in this profession.
